Depression Therapy
Depression has many faces. The causes are varied, and can include attachment disruptions with caregivers, systemic harms which are experienced by entire groups of people, or unprocessed painful events such as loss or trauma. When I work with a client who feels depressed, I am careful to learn about their particular experience. This learning process is called an assessment, and is fundamental in terms of customizing therapy to meet a particular person's needs.
Once my client and I come to a common understanding of what depression is for them, we create a holistic treatment plan. We look at the components of their life, and find the healing potential in each of these areas. Our plan can include psychological, spiritual, social, emotional and physical health steps. A great thing about this plan is that it makes use of what is already working in the client's life and helps to build on that. When appropriate, I will teach clients additional tools that others have found effective.
When working with clients who experience depression, it is possible that ideas of suicide could occur. As with any emotional or psychological issue, suicidal thoughts and urges each have a unique meaning and purpose. I work alongside my clients -at their own pace- to figure out why these feelings are happening, how to reduce risks and create a holistic plan for a life where suicide is no longer a primary option.
Note: Counselling for individuals affected by others' suicidal behaviour is also available.
If you struggle with depression it can be important to reach out, to share what is going on, and to gain information about your options. Contact me for help.
