Feminist Therapy
Feminist theory provides a shift in perspective around wellness. A common view in the health field is that people who suffer are in need of "fixing" by an expert. Feminist theory takes the stance that individuals are the experts of their lives, and that many of their struggles originate from our social context. As the name indicates, Feminist Therapy (FT) provides a framework for how I learn about people in terms of gender and all our intersecting aspects of identity.
Counsellors have a special influence in a client's life. As in Client-Centered Therapy, FT invites counsellors to use this power ethically. Ethical use of my role means providing support at a client's pace and with their consent. Another component of my ethical use of power is my demystifying the counselling process. I want my clients to be fully empowered as we work together.
Many of the difficulties for which individuals seek counselling have sources in greater social trends. With my background in FT, I both help clients to recognize the factors which contribute to their well-being, and to make choices to initiate change.
